About Foothills Community Band

The Foothills Community Band, founded by Janice Wypasek in 2002, has been performing in McDowell County for 20 years. Our musicians are volunteers from McDowell and surrounding counties. We subsist solely on donations from people like you! We partnered with MACA in 2022 and look forward to doing our part in continuing the growth and well-being of our community through the arts. We always have room for more! We welcome all ages and skill levels, so if you play an instrument, even if it’s been a while, we’d love to hear from you!

Our Conductor

Susan began her formal music training at age five, first on piano, followed by violin and clarinet. She studied Music Education at Appalachian State University and conducting and rehearsal techniques under Dr. Evan Feldman of UNC-Chapel Hill. For the past 28 years, she has played with various college and community ensembles, including ASU’s concert and symphonic bands, Gardner Webb University’s symphonic band and orchestra, The Symphony of Rutherford County, Foothills Community Band, and others.

We are located in MACA

Thanks to a partnership with the McDowell Arts Council Association, we are now located in their auditorium and rehearse there every Tuesday from 7:00pm - 8:30pm.
